About the position

The Deputy Sheriff serves under the Sheriff, responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local laws while protecting County residents and their property. The position requires the ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily, with reasonable accommodations provided for qualified individuals with disabilities. The role involves proactive and reactive patrol, responding to emergencies, investigating crimes, and maintaining law and order in Hamilton County.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct proactive and reactive patrol of County roads and designated areas.
  • Investigate and report suspicious or unlawful activities.
  • Respond to alarms and citizen calls of distress.
  • Stop drivers for traffic violations and issue warnings or citations.
  • Respond to and investigate traffic accidents.
  • Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Pursue, apprehend, search, and arrest suspects.
  • Perform booking procedures for detained individuals.
  • Participate in formal investigations of crimes.
  • Retrieve information using IDACS/NCIC and prepare reports.
  • Maintain appearance and serviceability of police vehicles and equipment.
  • Serve on or coordinate specialized law enforcement teams.
  • Transport detained individuals to courts or medical facilities.
  • Serve legal documents and testify in court as required.
  • Participate in training programs for certification in specialized areas.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certification or ability to be certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to legally carry a handgun and pass required firearms training.
  • Thorough knowledge of civil, criminal, and juvenile justice systems.
  • Ability to comply with departmental policies and work rules.
  • Knowledge of community geography and law enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with various stakeholders.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and safe driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or related fields.
  • Knowledge of first responder and CPR practices.
  • Experience with specialized law enforcement teams or technical assignments.
