About the position

The Deputy State Fire Marshal I position with the Commonwealth of Kentucky is a full-time role dedicated to ensuring the safety and compliance of public buildings with state fire and life safety codes. This position is part of the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, specifically within the Division of Fire Prevention. The primary responsibility of the Deputy State Fire Marshal I is to conduct inspections of existing public buildings to verify adherence to established fire safety regulations. These inspections are crucial for maintaining safety features such as means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and other essential equipment in satisfactory condition. The role involves direct interaction with property owners and occupants to facilitate necessary corrections and improvements to fire safety measures. In addition to inspections, the Deputy State Fire Marshal I will learn to review field inspection reports and may provide training to individuals or groups requesting fire safety programs. The position also includes the potential for involvement in fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of incidents, assisting law enforcement personnel, and examining fire incidents that may result in fatalities. The Deputy State Fire Marshal I will utilize the 2018 NFPA 101 "Life Safety Code" as a guideline for inspections, ensuring that all safety protocols are followed and enforced. Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections of existing public buildings for compliance with state fire/life safety codes.
  • Ensure that safety features such as means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and other necessary equipment are maintained in satisfactory condition.
  • Learn to review field inspection reports.
  • Meet with property owners and occupants to achieve necessary corrections.
  • Provide training to those who request programs.
  • Perform or assist with fire investigations to determine cause and origin, assist law enforcement personnel, and examine fire incidents that result in fatalities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment.
  • Two years of experience in mechanical trades installation or inspection; or two years in skilled building trades; OR one year as a fire prevention inspector in a fire department; OR one year as an inspector with the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction; OR one year of experience performing fire/life safety inspections with a private industry or other government agency; OR three years as a Fire Chief or a similar administrative position in a fire department.
  • An associate's degree in fire science technology, architecture, engineering or related fields will substitute for the two years of experience.
  • Proficient communication skills and sufficient technical knowledge of the 2018 NFPA 1 and 2018 NFPA 101.
