About the position
The Derrickhand is responsible for setting up, operating, maintaining, and dismantling derrick hoisting and drilling fluid circulating systems on a drilling rig. This role involves aligning and manipulating tubulars to assist in making up and breaking out drill and casing strings, as well as mixing and monitoring drilling fluid during operations. The Derrickhand also maintains inventories of drilling fluid components and mud pump parts, ensuring the integrity and functionality of the rig's systems.
Responsibilities
- Participates in drilling rig erection (rig up) and dismantling (rig down), ensuring the integrity and functionality of derrick structure, hoisting systems, and circulating systems.
- Inspects, positions, and aligns components of the drilling rig.
- Sets and bolts the crown block and strings cables through pulleys and blocks.
- Clamps holding fixtures on ends of hoisting cables and may provide work direction to other crew members.
- Aligns and manipulates sections of pipe or drill stem during drill string make up and break out.
- Guides lengths of pipe into and out of elevators and steadies pipe during connections or disconnections.
- Maintains on-site inventory of drilling fluid components and operates a forklift to transfer materials to mud pits.
- Weighs clay and mixes it with water and chemicals to create drilling fluid as instructed by the mud engineer.
- Monitors mud pit levels and drilling fluid density and viscosity during drilling operations.
- Prepares mud reports and informs the Driller and mud engineer of any changes in drilling fluid conditions.
- Carries out day-to-day maintenance of mud pumps and ensures all equipment is functioning properly.
- Maintains records of mud pump performance and keeps the mud pump area organized.
Requirements
- Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 1 year continuous oil or gas drilling rig work experience, including time as a fully-qualified Floorhand and assisting Derrickman and Motorman.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively.
- Familiarity with the function, safe use, and basic maintenance of various machines and tools.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.
