About the position

The Iowa Department of Public Safety is actively seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Communications Center Specialist within the Des Moines State Radio. This position is critical in ensuring effective communication between the public and law enforcement agencies. The primary responsibilities include eliciting information from private citizens and various state and federal agencies via telephone, and relaying this information to the appropriate personnel. The specialist will also monitor a computerized switching system, troubleshoot any system issues, and coordinate with repair services as necessary. In addition to these duties, the Communications Center Specialist will be responsible for receiving road condition data from other communications centers and entering this information into the computer system for dissemination to state and nationwide agencies. The role requires the operation of two-way radios, telephones, and communication computer systems to receive, transmit, and monitor messages from state, county, and municipal law enforcement or emergency services. The specialist will also obtain confidential criminal records and traffic safety information from the IOWA System for law enforcement officers, ensuring that they have the necessary data to perform their duties effectively. The position demands a high level of vigilance, as the specialist must maintain contact with investigation officers, monitoring messages to alert them of any suspected violence against officers involved. Furthermore, the specialist will process all calls, tips, and written reports made to the Governor's School Safety Bureau (GSSB) anonymous reporting tool, directing information expediently to the appropriate agency or first responder for follow-up action, in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Candidates must be prepared to undergo a thorough background investigation and pass a physical and psychological evaluation, which includes specific hearing and vision requirements. This role is essential for maintaining public safety and requires a dedicated individual who can handle high-pressure situations with professionalism and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Elicit information from private citizens and state and federal agencies via telephone and forward it to the proper personnel.
  • Monitor equipment comprised of computerized switching systems, isolate system problems, and notify repair services.
  • Receive road condition data from other communications centers and enter the information into the computer system for state and nationwide agencies.
  • Receive, transmit, and monitor messages from or between state, county, and municipal law enforcement or emergency services through the operation of two-way radios, telephones, and communication computer systems.
  • Obtain confidential criminal records and traffic safety information from the IOWA System for state and local law enforcement officers.
  • Elicit from callers the type of assistance needed and notify appropriate enforcement officials or emergency services.
  • Maintain contact with investigation officers by monitoring messages to alert them of suspected violence against officers involved.
  • Monitor, receive, and process all calls, tips, and written reports made to the Governor's School Safety Bureau (GSSB) anonymous reporting tool.
  • Assess and direct GSSB information expediently to the appropriate agency, agent, first responder, or healthcare provider for follow-up action.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience as a Communications operator, dispatcher, or radio operator in a city, county, state, federal, commercial, or industrial communications center.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience on the basis of one year of full-time experience equals 30 semester hours of college-level coursework in law enforcement or a related field, with a maximum substitution of two years.
  • Current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 12 months of full-time work as a Communications Center Specialist 1.
