About the position

The Design Associate - Maintenance & Operations (M&O) - Space Planning - Architect position involves supporting large electrical infrastructure programs for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) improvement projects. The role focuses on space planning, architectural design, and project management, contributing to impactful educational infrastructure initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Determine space needs based on operational requirements and make long-range planning recommendations.
  • Participate in the administration of the restacking plan, including reviewing documents and preparing drawings for alterations.
  • Create scope of work and develop architectural design options using CAD and 3D software for presentation and approval.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and estimates for building alterations and equipment installations based on space requirements.
  • Conduct field surveys and research related to planning and design development.
  • Prepare applications and submit to various agencies for approvals.
  • Prepare design packets and reports for executive staff.
  • Create complex architectural drawings and construction details for alterations and improvements.
  • Provide code analysis as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five (5) years' full-time paid professional experience in a large commercial, public agency, or school facilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and at least one 3D design software (e.g., SketchUp).
  • Experience in architectural design, coordinating drafting, conducting surveys, and reviewing vendor drawings.
  • Ability to analyze architectural problems and recommend solutions for office space utilization and equipment optimization.
  • Knowledge of California Department of Education, American Disability Act, and various building codes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of architectural characteristics of building materials.
  • Ability to interpret codes for California Department of Education, ADA, and Building & Safety, and Fire codes.
  • Proficiency in creating architectural design options and construction document details.
