About the position

The Design Automation Engineer will play a crucial role in the South Carolina Department of Transportation by assisting with the design, maintenance, procurement, testing, program customization, and implementation of CADD Workspaces and engineering software programs. This position is essential for streamlining project setup and data access for various design teams, including hydraulic design, roadway design, geotechnical design, and bridge structural design. The engineer will be responsible for customizing programs in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and department specifications, ensuring that all processes meet the required guidelines. Additionally, the engineer will recommend and promote automation procedures to enhance existing drafting and plotting processes, thereby improving efficiency and productivity within the department. In this role, the engineer will provide technical assistance to the Regional Production Group offices, focusing on CADD, engineering software, and plotting controls to expedite project design time. Training and technical assistance will be provided to users of plan development programs, ensuring that all team members are equipped with the necessary skills to utilize the software effectively. The engineer will also assist in the development and support of electronic engineering roadway construction data for SCDOT construction offices and contractors, facilitating communication and data transfer between various stakeholders. The Design Automation Engineer will represent Engineering Support in meetings and conferences, providing oral and written evaluation reports, technical documentation, and presentations to management. Customized documentation will be created to assist users in software usage, and the engineer will attend technical conferences to stay updated on industry trends and advancements. The role may also involve providing engineering plotting services to the department, producing special plots and PowerPoint presentations for executive meetings. Furthermore, the engineer will assist the Regional Production Groups with project-specific tasks, including engineering data analysis, DTM modeling, and plan preparation, as needed for training or technical support. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, maintenance, procurement, testing, program customization, and implementation of CADD Workspaces and engineering software programs.
  • Streamline project setup and data access for hydraulic design, roadway design, geotechnical design, and bridge structural design teams.
  • Customize hydraulic design, roadway design, geotechnical design, and bridge design programs according to AASHTO and department specifications.
  • Recommend and promote automation procedures to enhance drafting and plotting processes.
  • Provide technical assistance to Regional Production Group offices regarding CADD, engineering software, and plotting controls.
  • Provide training and technical assistance in using plan development programs for design and plan preparation.
  • Assist in the development, support, and training in the creation of electronic engineering roadway construction data for SCDOT construction offices and contractors.
  • Communicate with Regional Production Groups, consultants, and other SCDOT engineering offices to coordinate data transfer.
  • Represent Engineering Support in meetings and conferences, providing evaluation reports and technical documentation to management.
  • Create customized documentation to assist users in software usage and attend technical conferences.
  • Provide engineering plotting services to the department and produce special plots and PowerPoint files for executive presentations.
  • Assist Regional Production Groups with project-specific tasks, including engineering data analysis, DTM modeling, and plan preparation.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.
  • Two (2) years of engineering or construction management work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
