About the position

Valmont Industries, Inc. is seeking a Design Drafter to join their Lighting, Traffic & Communication Structures division. This remote position is ideal for individuals with experience in steel manufacturing and fabrication. The primary responsibilities of the Drafter include processing orders, interpreting customer specifications, and preparing detailed drawings. The role requires collaboration across various departments to ensure quality and meet project objectives. The Drafter will also be responsible for identifying issues in customer information and suggesting improvements to procedures and designs, ensuring compliance with company standards. In this position, the Drafter will analyze order information for accuracy and efficiency, monitor and manage the department backlog, and maintain productivity and order accuracy standards. They will also be tasked with updating and organizing the filing system for customer requirements and staying informed about current drafting policies and manufacturing capabilities. The Drafter will propose changes to standard designs to enhance customer acceptance or reduce product costs and will handle special assignments as requested by the Drafting Supervisor or Manager. The Drafter will report directly to the Drafting Supervisor and will not have any direct reports. While the position involves minimal travel (up to 5%), it is essential for the Drafter to maintain a positive and professional attitude in a fast-paced environment with specific deadlines. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail are crucial for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Process orders and prepare detailed drawings based on customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with various departments to maintain quality and meet project objectives.

  • Handle special assignments as requested by Drafting Supervisor/Manager.
  • Provide assistance to other departments in interpreting specifications, capabilities, or procedures.
  • Offer technical or drafting support for projects across departments.

Requirements

  • High School diploma with 2+ years of relevant work or educational experience, including one year of drafting experience in the division's market channel.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided drafting with a basic understanding of mathematics, typically acquired through an Associate of Applied Science degree or related experience, including Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
  • Strong background in 2-D and/or 3-D modeling techniques and previous PC experience, including intermediate-level knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoDesk software.
  • Knowledge of product end-use, fabrication, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% (domestically).
  • Ability to maintain a positive, professional attitude in a fast-paced environment with specific deadlines, and strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates Degree in Drafting.
  • Autodesk Inventor 2013 or newer version.
  • AutoCAD 2013, PDF (Nitro Pro), Zoom, Inventor 2019, Scientific Calculator and Drafting Equipment knowledge/experience.
  • Proficiency in at least two product lines and ability to read and interpret customer specifications accurately.
  • Familiarity with Valmont's drafting processes and systems.
