About the position

Valmont seeks a Drafter experienced in steel manufacturing and fabrication for their Lighting, Traffic & Communication Structures division. The role involves processing orders, interpreting customer specifications, and preparing drawings, with occasional customer interaction. Collaboration across departments is crucial to maintain quality and meet objectives. The Drafter identifies issues in customer information and suggests improvements to procedures and designs, ensuring compliance with company standards. They also review internal documents for accuracy and may release projects under supervision, while having authority to make decisions within established guidelines, escalating issues as needed. The Drafter at Valmont plays a pivotal role in processing orders and maintaining departmental efficiency. They interact with various departments, interpret customer specifications, and propose procedural enhancements. This role involves checking and releasing drawings, ensuring compliance, and making decisions within established protocols. While authorized to make certain decisions independently, they escalate matters as needed and collaborate with supervisors for guidance on complex issues.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze order information thoroughly for accuracy and efficiency
  • Monitor and manage department backlog, updating computerized records and meeting order priorities
  • Maintain required productivity and order accuracy standards
  • Update and organize filing system for customer requirements
  • Stay informed about current drafting policies and manufacturing capabilities
  • Identify, recommend, and assist in implementing changes to drafting procedures and systems
  • Propose changes to standard designs to enhance customer acceptance or reduce product costs
  • Handle special assignments as requested by Drafting Supervisor/Manager
  • Provide assistance to other departments in interpreting specifications, capabilities, or procedures
  • Offer technical or drafting support for projects across departments to enhance product or company interests

Requirements

  • High School diploma with 2+ years of relevant work or educational experience, including one year of drafting experience in the division's market channel
  • Proficiency in computer-aided drafting with a basic understanding of mathematics, typically acquired through an Associate of Applied Science degree or related experience, including Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry
  • Strong background in 2-D and/or 3-D modeling techniques and previous PC experience, including intermediate-level knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoDesk software
  • Knowledge of product end-use, fabrication, and manufacturing processes
  • Ability to travel up to 5% (domestically)
  • Ability to maintain a positive, professional attitude in a fast-paced environment with specific deadlines, and strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and a math-oriented approach.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates Degree in Drafting
  • Autodesk Inventor 2013 or newer version
  • AutoCAD 2013, PDF (Nitro Pro), Zoom, Inventor 2019, Scientific Calculator and Drafting Equipment knowledge/experience
  • Proficiency in at least two product lines and ability to read and interpret customer specifications accurately
  • Familiarity with Valmont's drafting processes and systems
