The Design Engineer position at The Toro Company focuses on the development of innovative products, specifically in the realm of autonomous-capable, electric drivetrain, hybrid, and battery-electric mowers. This role is split evenly between two primary responsibilities: 50% of the time will be dedicated to working within a small team of mechanical designers on new product development, while the other 50% will involve maintenance and cost improvements of existing products. The engineer will be responsible for creating designs and layouts for new product concepts, ensuring that all engineering designs meet market, safety, quality, performance, reliability, and durability requirements. This includes preparing design layouts, coordinating with other team members, and conducting necessary design calculations such as gear pulley ratios and weight distribution. In addition to design responsibilities, the engineer will also secure assistance from consultants or internal specialists, conduct team design reviews, and ensure that all parts designed can be manufactured. The role requires maintaining accurate lists of parts created and coordinating the release of parts for production, whether for prototypes or final production. The engineer will work closely with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, and test engineers to determine necessary changes to meet customer requirements and will be expected to solve design problems and coordinate documentation to implement changes in a timely manner. CADD will be utilized as necessary for project-related work, and the engineer will keep their supervisor informed of project status and any issues that may require assistance.
