The Designer/Page Editor for Sports at Gannett is responsible for producing high-quality content in collaboration with multiple Gannett newspapers. This role requires a strong command of design and headline writing techniques, ensuring that all work is completed efficiently and accurately, often under minimal supervision. The designer will create content for both print and digital platforms, employing journalistic principles to assess the importance and fairness of stories, which is crucial in determining how to present them effectively. In this position, the designer will work independently to write clear and engaging headlines, as well as other display types that capture the attention of readers. They will be tasked with trimming stories to fit designated spaces while ensuring that the stories are layered effectively to enhance the overall presentation. Utilizing the CUE system best-practice workflow, the designer will continuously seek innovative ways to improve efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration, all while adhering to strict deadlines. The role also involves designing content with precision, using layered information that reflects the tone of the product and its target market. Adherence to Unified style guidelines is essential. Collaboration with site editors and staff is a key component of the job, as the designer will maximize the use of newshole and resources, assigning stories to pages based on the site's booking philosophy and page-flow requirements. Additionally, the designer will proofread display types, track jumps, and correct errors as assigned. Editing display types to conform to Network and AP style is also a critical responsibility. The designer may be required to perform other duties as necessary and as assigned, showcasing their versatility and commitment to the role.
