About the position

The Design Technician I Engineering role at Builders FirstSource involves creating designs and drawings based on client specifications and company order forms. This position is crucial for ensuring that structures are safe, stable, and compliant with relevant codes. The technician collaborates with sales personnel and customers, prepares design modifications, and follows quality control procedures to maintain high standards in design implementation.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with outside sales personnel and customers to accurately complete safe and quality structures.
• Assure stability, deflection, and load carrying in compliance with project codes.
• Follow quality control procedures for completeness, accuracy, and code compliance.
• Confer with clients and technical staff to prepare design modifications as required.
• Develop and complete design details from original concept drawings and prepare layouts.
• Draw rough sketches or arrange for finished drawings to illustrate specified materials or assembly sequence.
• Write technical descriptions specifying material qualities and properties.
• Review designs for efficient and profitable use of inventory, equipment, and labor.
• Demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement and continuous improvement philosophy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Preferably experience with PrimeCad, MS Word, MS Excel, and AutoCAD.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies.
• Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
• Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
