Gannett is seeking a talented Design Editor to join our team, responsible for producing high-quality content across multiple Gannett newspapers. This remote position allows for flexibility, as it can be based anywhere in the United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The Design Editor will play a crucial role in conceiving and designing engaging content, including centerpieces for section fronts, tailored for print, digital, and social media platforms. In this role, the Design Editor will employ journalistic principles to assess the importance and fairness of stories, ensuring that the content is presented in a compelling manner. The responsibilities include designing content for various platforms, creating sophisticated cover pages, and utilizing alternative story forms that reflect the tone of the content and the target market. The Design Editor will also be responsible for producing or selecting appropriate illustrations to enhance visual storytelling, adhering to Unified style guidelines and best practices in workflow management. Collaboration is key in this position, as the Design Editor will work closely with site editors, planners, and staff to optimize the use of resources and newshole. The role involves assigning stories to pages based on the site's booking philosophy and news judgment, while also being mindful of co-workers' workloads to ensure deadlines are met. Attention to detail is essential, as the Design Editor will proofread display type, run spell-checks, and track jumps, correcting any errors as necessary. Additional duties may be assigned as needed, making this a dynamic and engaging role within the organization.
