About the position

The Designer for Dial Books for Young Readers and Rocky Pond Books at Penguin Random House is responsible for creating visually appealing trade hardcover children's books. This role involves collaborating with various stakeholders throughout the book development process, from manuscript to final product, ensuring that each book reflects the author's and illustrator's vision while maintaining high design standards. The designer will work on a diverse range of projects, including picture books, illustrated chapter books, and graphic novels, and will be expected to bring creativity, organization, and attention to detail to all aspects of the design process.

Responsibilities

  • Concepting, designing, and managing all stages of book projects from sketches to final proofs.
  • Executing a broad range of design styles appropriate for various age groups and formats.
  • Collaborating with the Art Director and team members from concept to final book production.
  • Communicating effectively with artists and agents throughout the design process.
  • Preparing press-ready files and approving proofs while adhering to production schedules and deadlines.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in children's publishing book design.
  • Strong typography skills and ability to combine type and image effectively.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator).
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hand-lettering and illustration skills.
  • Active involvement in the illustrator community and ability to seek out new talent.
  • Enjoys creative problem-solving in a wide variety of projects.
  • Knowledge of pre-press, 4-color, 2-color, and specialty printing processes.
