About the position

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a Designer/Drafter 5 to join the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division. This role involves working within a design team to assess, maintain, and upgrade facility systems at LANL, which is the nation's most modern plutonium science and manufacturing facility. The successful candidate will lead and mentor junior designers while creating detailed facility designs and conducting evaluations of existing conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs.
  • Visit facilities to evaluate existing conditions and identify deficiencies.
  • Produce calculations and design recommendations.
  • Develop initial design solutions for new facilities, additions, renovations, and repairs for engineering review.
  • Mentor and lead training for junior Designers/Drafters.
  • Update and maintain LANL's CAD Standards.

Requirements

  • Advanced skill in computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools.
  • Ability to complete facility designs for engineering review and draft design drawings in CAD software.
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Expert level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principles, including GD&T.
  • Expert understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts in mechanical, electro/mechanical, structural, or electrical disciplines.
  • Expert knowledge of ASME, ANSI, AWS, and related industry standards.
  • Expert understanding of design, fabrication, assembly, and fielding of components and mechanisms.
  • Expert understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, and facility equipment.
  • Expert understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for design and manufacture.
  • Ability to mentor other designer/drafters.
  • Experience preparing and presenting AutoCAD training to classes of 20-30 Drafter/Designers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects.
  • Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques and CAD modeling.
  • Utilize working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model generation.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.
  • Advanced knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
  • AutoCAD Certification.
