About the position

The Designer Drafter position is a critical role within the engineering team, primarily focused on providing exceptional customer service and technical support. This role involves routine interaction with customers, co-team members, business units, and division management to ensure that all customer-related information is communicated effectively. The Designer Drafter will be responsible for completing design setups for new and revised products and assisting with drafting tasks as directed by the Engineering supervisor. Under the general supervision of Engineering leadership, the Designer Drafter will handle regular drafting duties and provide technical customer service by addressing inquiries related to all products. This includes managing reworks, government specifications, and competitive interchange, all while using sound judgment to enhance customer service and maintain division profitability. The Designer Drafter will collaborate closely with the business unit to facilitate customer requirements and ensure that all technical needs are met promptly and efficiently. The essential functions of this role include timely responses to customer inquiries, assisting the product sales manager in developing service and catalog literature, and creating detailed assembly, sub-assembly, and component drawings using CAD software. The Designer Drafter will also convert customer layouts into final assembly manufacturing drawings, prepare bills of materials and specifications, and ensure the accuracy and maintenance of Engineering Change Notices (ECNs). Close interaction with manufacturing personnel and engineers is essential to complete jobs effectively, interpret drawings for assembly and test specifications, and instruct assembly and test teams on non-standard models. Additionally, the Designer Drafter will recommend changes to refine and enhance products and processes by applying continuous improvement principles and techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Timely response to all customer inquiries, while working closely with engineering to meet customer needs.
  • Assist product sales manager with the development of service and catalog literature, crossover competitors model number, and identify dated number and old/obsolete numbers.
  • Create final assembly, sub-assembly and component drawings to customer design utilizing CAD.
  • Convert customer layouts to final assembly manufacturing drawings.
  • Prepare bills of materials and specifications when drawings are complete.
  • Ensure the initiation, accuracy and maintenance of Engineering Change Notices (ECN's).
  • Interact closely with both Manufacturing Personnel and Engineers in order to complete jobs.
  • Interpret drawings for assembly and test specs for manufacturing.
  • Instruct assembly and test on non-standard models.
  • Recommend changes to refine and enhance products and process by applying continuous improvement principles and techniques.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Knowledge of mechanical drawing, elementary mechanics and strength of materials.
  • Four-year degree in technical related field or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of CAD.
