About the position

The Detention and Corrections Ombudsperson serves as a key contact for inmates, their families, attorneys, and community groups, facilitating the investigation and resolution of grievances and critical issues within Santa Rita Jail. This role involves providing neutral advice, consulting on departmental policies, and analyzing evidence-based practices related to inmate care and custody. The Ombudsperson acts as a public relations expert and makes recommendations to executive staff regarding detention and correctional facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the contact for inmates, families, attorneys, and community groups regarding grievances and claims.
  • Facilitate the investigation and resolution of inmate grievances and critical issues within Santa Rita Jail.
  • Act as a neutral third party providing advice and consultation to executive staff.
  • Analyze, research, and interpret information on evidence-based practices and legislation.
  • Make recommendations regarding departmental policies and procedures.
  • Gather and compile data for reporting on inmate grievances and complaints.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Handle high-pressure situations and extract appropriate information.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience as an Administrative Specialist II or Program Specialist in the Alameda County Classified service.
  • Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, criminal justice, social welfare, or a related field, plus three years of professional-level experience in administrative or management services.
  • Completion of the Alameda County Management Academy Management & Supervision Certificate Program may substitute for six months of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a law enforcement agency setting.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and county detention and correctional facility regulations.
  • Familiarity with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policies and laws.
