About the position

The Detentions Officer is a non-sworn position responsible for processing, guarding, securing, and confining individuals detained or arrested at the Chula Vista Police Department City Jail. This role involves working collaboratively with sworn peace officers and other staff to ensure efficient jail operations and maintaining order within the facility. The officer will perform various duties related to inmate management, safety, and security, while also adhering to legal and procedural guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Book, process, photograph, and fingerprint inmates.
  • Search incoming inmates for weapons and contraband.
  • Prepare arrest packets and check criminal history backgrounds.
  • Process evidence collected from prisoners.
  • Maintain order in holding facilities and restrain combative prisoners when necessary.
  • Complete jail reports for incidents occurring in the facility.
  • Provide detailed information to the watch commander.
  • Handle prisoners in accordance with Title 15 and 24 CCR.
  • Segregate inmates when necessary and confine juveniles in separate holding areas.
  • Provide prisoner information to other law enforcement agencies or facility personnel.
  • Assist arresting officers with DUI tests (breathalyzer).
  • Transport prisoners to various facilities as required.
  • Guard prisoners in the hospital before transfer to county detention facilities.
  • Maintain jail security and ensure a safe and sanitary facility.
  • Coordinate and supervise daily inmate meals distribution.
  • Complete various clerical reports including booking reports and jail logs.
  • Edit and process incoming teletype information messages regarding warrants.
  • Maintain and update the Jail's Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Follow bail schedules and process bail monies and/or bonds.
  • Respond to alarms and conduct perimeter security checks.
  • Coordinate the release of prisoners and create photo lineups.

Requirements

  • One year of responsible experience in a position with high public contact.
  • Completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college courses in criminal justice or a related field.
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • A valid California driver's license.
  • Successful completion of an Adult Corrections Officer Core Course within one year of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous completion of the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Academy Course.
