About the position

The DevSecOps Digital Engineering Intern position at Penn State University offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in software development, cybersecurity, and cloud-native tool management within the Digital Engineering Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL). Interns will work on cutting-edge technologies that support military, DoD, and intelligence communities, contributing to the design and implementation of secure, automated infrastructure solutions in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design or implement secure, automated infrastructure solutions for high-performance computing environments through Agile software development and cybersecurity.
  • Perform and review code changes and documentation as needed.
  • Maintain continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for frequent, trouble-free deployments of code.
  • Configure or optimize various compute, firewall, or network resources and networks including bare metal or cloud environments.
  • Coordinate with the team to identify risks, issues, requirements, and design solutions for project-level activities.

Requirements

  • High interest in Linux-based infrastructures or system administration.
  • Knowledge of security profile evaluation and application.
  • Familiarity with Ansible, Puppet, or shell/scripting languages.
  • Experience with logging platforms such as Splunk, ELK stack, or Prometheus.
  • Basic understanding of software virtualization or networking.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity assessments, incident response, or investigations.
  • Understanding of security control or policy integration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with DevOps / DevSecOps tools and practices.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure / automation.
  • Knowledge of configuration management via Git, Bitbucket, or GitLab.
  • Experience with container/orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of software vulnerability or compliance assessment.
  • Knowledge of system security architectures including firewalls, router ACLs, web content filters, and DMZ.
