About the position

The Development Engineer at MAHLE is responsible for leading and executing engine performance and emissions development projects, focusing on gasoline and diesel engine testing. This role involves conducting detailed analyses, preparing technical reports, and collaborating with various teams to ensure project success. The engineer will also mentor junior staff and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, plan and execute engine performance and emissions development programs with guidance from a Sr. Engineer
  • Conduct detailed thermodynamic analysis of engine performance and emissions test results, preparing technical reports, papers, and presentations based on those results
  • Perform P-V diagram analysis for combustion burn rates and mean effective pressure determination
  • Conduct heat transfer analysis for emissions aftertreatment light off assessment and coolant system heat rejection
  • Analyze emissions aftertreatment system performance and efficiency using regulated certification drive cycles
  • Summarize test results and data into a reportable format, making recommendations for future test plans
  • Support engine dynamometer test cells with work instructions and test plans for technicians
  • Ensure test equipment is properly calibrated and meets customer accuracy and repeatability requirements
  • Analyze gasoline and diesel engine performance and emissions technology trends to plan projects
  • Lead and participate in department continuous improvement activities
  • Train and mentor junior engineers/interns on department processes and technical skills
  • Collaborate with management to determine engineering feasibility, cost, and timing for engine development quotes
  • Assist with quoting activities for customer requests involving gasoline, diesel, or electrified powertrain development testing
  • Maintain knowledge of new engine testing technologies to improve operations
  • Communicate effectively with project management to meet budget, timing, and quality requirements
  • Prepare project reports in Microsoft PowerPoint or Word format for management and clients

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, automotive, or equivalent engineering field is required
  • Two or more years of related experience
  • In-depth knowledge of internal combustion engines and testing techniques
  • Ability to work effectively with management, design, calibration, technical staff, customers, and suppliers
  • Ability to recognize new business opportunities
  • Logical and methodical approach to tasks
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Presentation and public speaking skills
  • Familiarity with industry standard calibration tools (ATI Vision, ETAS Inca, ETAS ASCMO)
  • Experience with advanced plotting packages (Uniplot, MDA, Concerto)
  • Experience with both gasoline and diesel engines

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's in mechanical, automotive, or equivalent engineering field
