About the position

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office is hosting its 2021 Virtual Career Expo, aimed at recruiting dedicated individuals for the position of Deputy Sheriff. As a Deputy Sheriff, your primary responsibility will be to oversee individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial in the Gwinnett County Jail, which operates as a direct supervision pretrial facility. This position is the entry-level role in the Deputy Sheriff series, with opportunities for advancement to Senior Deputy Sheriff and beyond, across various divisions including administration, court services/civil, jail, field operations, and investigative services. The position is classified as safety-sensitive, necessitating a pre-employment drug test and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Gwinnett County's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace policy. Candidates must successfully navigate a comprehensive background check process, which includes evaluations of criminal history, controlled substances, credit, driving records, and employment history, followed by an oral interview. The second phase of the hiring process involves a drug screen, polygraph examination, and psychological assessment. The starting salary for a Deputy Sheriff is $36,101, with potential incentives for educational qualifications, leading to higher salaries for those who meet the necessary job requirements and complete training programs. This position also qualifies for compensation under the Employee Referral Program, encouraging current employees to refer qualified candidates.

Responsibilities

• Oversee individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid Georgia Driver's License.
• Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application.
• Must be a US Citizen for certification.
• Ability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays.
• Must obtain a state certificate from jailer's school within six months from the date of hire.
• Ability to use a computer for data entry and report writing.
• Law enforcement, military, or security experience is highly preferred.
