About the position

The Development Researcher at Lehigh University plays a crucial role in enhancing the university's fundraising efforts by conducting in-depth research and analysis on potential donors. This position involves compiling and analyzing biographical and financial data to assess gift capacity and philanthropic tendencies, as well as creating detailed profiles and briefing reports for senior leadership. The role requires strong organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage key research initiatives effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Compile and analyze detailed biographical and asset data on individuals to determine gift capacity and philanthropic giving.
  • Investigate prospects' financial status, including stock holdings, salary, real property, and community philanthropy.
  • Research history of relationship, contacts, and philanthropy with Lehigh University.
  • Identify and access pertinent reference and library sources, including online references and local libraries.
  • Obtain detailed financial disclosures, including SEC filings, IRS 990 filings, and corporate annual reports.
  • Review, analyze, and synthesize data as it relates to the fundraising strategy.
  • Validate/qualify prospects with the potential to make major gifts using wealth and data analytic screenings.
  • Compose and edit written summary and briefing reports on major gift prospects for University senior leadership.
  • Serve as project manager on assigned projects, collaborating with gift officers and DAR partners.
  • Assist on special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts, Economics, Social Sciences, Business, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to three years of related work experience in a higher educational institution or non-profit organization.
  • Advanced online research skills within a development office.
  • Research experience and statistical analysis skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience reading and interpreting financial statements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a higher educational institution or non-profit organization is preferred.
  • Familiarity with development research best practices.
