About the position

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Ultrasound) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves performing ultrasound and general diagnostic radiology procedures independently. The role is primarily focused on conducting vascular ultrasound (40% of the time), general ultrasound (40%), and X-ray/Dexa (20%). The technologist is responsible for ensuring high-quality imaging to assist in diagnosing and treating patient medical disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Perform ultrasound and radiology examinations ranging from routine to highly specialized in a clinic setting.
  • Set up and adjust all equipment and manually maneuver the transducer to perform examinations.
  • Conduct ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest, extremities, and retroperitoneal space.
  • Perform vascular imaging, including US Carotid and extremity veins.
  • Evaluate the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearrange priorities accordingly.
  • Interpret requests or instructions from the radiologist or clinician.
  • Control technical factors on the ultrasound unit affecting examination quality.
  • Demonstrate skills in performing complex ultrasound procedures, including Doppler exams.
  • Maintain sterile field for invasive procedures such as biopsies and aspirations.
  • Advise radiologist of significant abnormalities requiring immediate attention.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT).
  • Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in a diagnostic radiologic technology program accredited by JRCERT or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in a related position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Diagnostic and vascular ultrasound experience preferred.
  • X-ray experience is also preferred.
  • ARDMS & ARRT Radiography certification.
