About the position

The Diagnostic Radiology Technologist position at the Veterans Health Administration involves performing a variety of radiographic examinations to diagnose illnesses or injuries. The role requires technical proficiency in operating radiologic equipment, preparing patients for procedures, and ensuring the quality of images for interpretation. Technologists will work closely with radiologists and other medical staff, monitor patient conditions, and adhere to safety protocols while providing care in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of difficult and routine radiographic examinations for diagnosis.
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, position patients, select technical factors, and make exposures.
  • Review and process images for quality and prepare them for interpretation.
  • Set up and operate accessory equipment for special examinations as needed.
  • Obtain patient consent and perform Time Out for invasive procedures.
  • Monitor patient's condition and vital signs, notifying the radiologist of significant changes.
  • Prepare contrast materials for diagnostic imaging exams and document any reactions.
  • Perform radiographic examinations at the patient's bedside and in the operating room as required.
  • Explain exams to patients or family members to ensure understanding of procedures and hazards.
  • Register patients into the computerized Radiology Information System.
  • Practice radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients and staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness and adequate supply levels in assigned areas.
  • Capture computerized and digital radiographs, applying algorithms and verifying patient information before transmission.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R) is required.
  • Completion of a full-time training course in diagnostic radiologic technology accredited by JRCERT or equivalent is necessary.
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level for higher grade positions is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced ARRT certification for computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is preferred.
