About the position

As a Charge Nurse at Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), you will play a pivotal role in supporting the organization's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure quality patient care while maintaining cost-effective clinical operations in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements. You will manage daily decisions to ensure continuity of care, focusing on patient and staff safety, and oversee the delivery of safe, effective, and quality outcomes in a healthcare setting. In this role, you will provide day-to-day guidance, support, and direction to direct patient care staff, offering informal feedback continuously and formal feedback during annual performance evaluations. You will participate in staffing decisions, including hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions, and recommend disciplinary measures to the Facility Administrator as necessary. Your leadership will ensure compliance with all company and facility-approved procedures and policies, as well as regulations set forth by state and federal agencies. You will also be responsible for approving or disapproving time or personnel schedule changes in the absence of the Facility Administrator, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and policies. Participation in patient care plan meetings is essential, as is maintaining knowledge of current practices related to dialysis principles and techniques through scheduled in-services. Training and orienting staff will be part of your duties, along with routinely observing and guiding direct patient care staff to ensure adherence to facility policies and procedures. Your role will involve promoting compliance with OSHA programs to maintain a safe and clean working environment, overseeing overall shift operations efficiently and effectively. You will conduct staff meetings with the Facility Administrator to keep patient care staff informed of changes in patient care needs or operations. Regular meetings with the Facility Administrator will be necessary to discuss personnel and patient care status, issues, and information. You will supervise all documentation of patient information and coordinate Charge Nurse duties with Staff RNs acting in a relief charge capacity. In emergency situations, you will assume primary responsibility, assess patient needs, respond to dialysis treatments, and communicate concerns to the rounding physician. You will monitor and supervise all patient care activity during dialysis and assist as necessary, collaborating with the direct patient care team to make decisions that benefit patient care. Continuous monitoring of patients' conditions regarding potential complications associated with dialysis will be crucial, as will administering medications per physician's orders. You will act as a subject matter expert and resource for staff members, supervising and participating in the completion of short and long-term care plans, admitting new patients according to facility procedures, and ensuring educational needs of patients are met regarding End Stage Renal Disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medication.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all dialysis related and emergency equipment safely and efficiently when needed.
  • Complete Nurse's Technical Training Program/Water Quality Facility Assist.
  • Assist with special projects or other duties as assigned by the Facility Administrator.
  • Assist with the interviewing of potential direct patient care staff.
  • Promote efficient use of medical supplies.
  • Attend and participate in monthly Quality Assurance meetings.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (R.N.)
  • Must be registered and licensed to practice in the applicable State.
  • Minimum of 12 months of nursing experience, plus 6 months of specialized experience providing clinical nursing care to dialysis patients.
  • Medical/surgical nursing experience preferred.
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Certified in CPR or successfully complete course in CPR certification.
  • Good communication skills - verbal and written.
