About the position

The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice position is designed for individuals seeking to gain hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles. This role involves a structured training program focused on preventative maintenance, detailed inspections, and repairs, ensuring that trucks are safe for operation. The position requires physical exertion and the ability to work in various positions and environments within a vehicle maintenance shop.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training to perform repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles in compliance with regulations and company policies.
  • Receive training to perform detailed inspections, lubricate, and service vehicles as part of preventative maintenance.
  • Receive training to check, fill, and/or change fluids and filters for vehicle parts.
  • Receive training to perform inspections on vehicle support systems, including electrical, air, and brake systems.
  • Receive training to identify and perform repairs and adjustments to vehicle components and systems.
  • Ensure all safety devices on vehicles are in good working order.
  • Assist senior technicians with repairs and maintenance assignments.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties related to tools and work areas.
  • Engage in periodic assessments and meet required metrics of the training program.
  • Perform administrative duties such as cycle counts and parts requisitions.
  • Maintain accurate records on the computer.
  • May require travel within the district for training or business needs.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of truck components and systems.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and interest in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to safely drive vehicles in and out of service areas.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work in various environments and receive hands-on training.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

  • General Education Diploma or better preferred.
