About the position

The Diesel Mechanic Technician A is responsible for ensuring the safety and operational efficiency of the company's fleet diesel equipment. This role involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining medium to heavy-duty trucks and trailers, ensuring compliance with safety standards and operational requirements. The technician works under minimal supervision and plays a crucial role in supporting the food distribution system by keeping vehicles in optimal condition.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and repairs medium to heavy-duty trucks, trailers, reefer units, and maintenance vehicles under minimal supervision.
  • Completes overhauls and rebuilds of heavy-duty diesel engines and transmissions.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on fleet diesel equipment, including tractors and refrigeration units.
  • Identifies root causes of failures and performs necessary repairs.
  • Inspects brake systems, steering mechanisms, and wheel bearings to ensure proper operating conditions.
  • Ensures equipment has required licensing and registration before being deemed roadworthy.
  • Documents work orders for repairs and preventative maintenance through the online Enterprise Asset Management system.
  • Installs, replaces, and repairs onboard computers.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes and battery checks using hand and power tools.
  • Trains and provides guidance to other mechanics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or State Approved Equivalent.
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in medium to heavy-duty vehicle repair, including PMs, tire & wheel, air & air disc brakes, diagnosis, computerized diagnostics, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in refrigeration and/or overhauls and rebuilds of heavy-duty diesel engines and transmissions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates/2-Year Technical Degree.
  • 7 - 10 years of proven experience in medium to heavy-duty vehicle repair, including PMs, tire & wheel, air & air disc brakes, diagnosis, computerized diagnostics, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Preferred certifications in tire & wheel, brakes, AC and/or EPA, engine rebuild, DOT inspections, transmissions, engines, ASE Heavy Duty.
