About the position

The Diesel Mechanic position at the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) involves performing minor and major repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment vehicles, light vehicles, and tools. The role requires diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues while adhering to safety practices. The mechanic will also assist in major overhauls and repairs of complex automotive problems, ensuring the operational efficiency of INDOT's fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs or other related mechanical work such as adjusting valves and changing tires.
  • Install snowplow blades and repair damaged plow assemblies.
  • Perform minor body repair work.
  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed.
  • Service and repair highway equipment in the field, using welding equipment as needed.
  • Diagnose performance issues for both gas and diesel engines.
  • Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage and perform necessary repairs.
  • Conduct snow removal and maintain cleanliness of the garage and tools.
  • Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment as required.
  • Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.
  • Attend training and safety meetings as required.
  • Order and/or pick up parts when necessary.
  • Provide emergency service and repair of vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or HSE diploma.
  • At least 1+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Driver's license is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
  • Ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
  • Ability to understand mechanical procedures.
