About the position

The Diesel Mechanic position at the State of Indiana involves performing minor and major repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment vehicles, light vehicles, and tools. The role requires diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues while adhering to safety practices. The mechanic will also assist in major engine overhauls and complex automotive repairs, contributing to the maintenance of the state's transportation fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars, light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs or related mechanical work, such as adjusting valves and changing tires.
  • Install snowplow blades and repair damaged plow assemblies.
  • Perform minor body repair work.
  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed.
  • Service and repair highway equipment in the field, using welding equipment as needed.
  • Diagnose performance issues for gas and diesel engines.
  • Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage and perform snow removal when necessary.
  • Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment as required.
  • Attend training and safety meetings as necessary.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or HSE diploma.
  • At least 1+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Driver's license is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
  • Ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
