About the position

The Outpatient Transplant Dietitian I at Keck Medicine of USC is a vital role dedicated to providing comprehensive nutritional services for patients undergoing liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants, as well as for living donors. This position is essential in managing the nutritional needs of patients throughout the various stages of transplantation, which is critical for improving and maintaining their nutritional status. The dietitian will be responsible for developing and implementing assessment protocols, nutrition education programs, and lifestyle intervention strategies tailored to the unique needs of patients at nutritional risk. In this role, the dietitian will obtain and interpret relevant medical information to assess patients' nutritional status and identify risks, including the presence of malnutrition. Utilizing a variety of assessment tools such as nutrition-focused physical exams and motivational interviewing, the dietitian will create individualized medical nutrition therapy plans aligned with the patients' medical goals. Collaboration with healthcare team members is crucial, as the dietitian will work closely with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to provide effective medical nutrition therapy and education to patients and their families. The Outpatient Transplant Dietitian I will also engage in quality improvement projects, research initiatives, and mentorship of dietetic interns and students. This position requires a commitment to professional development and adherence to ethical standards in dietetics. The dietitian will play a key role in coordinating nutrition care with multidisciplinary teams and will be involved in community outreach efforts to enhance patient education and program services. Overall, this position is integral to ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of nutritional care during their transplant journey.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nutritional services for liver, kidney, and pancreas disease transplant recipients and living donors.
  • Update and implement assessment protocols and nutrition education programs.
  • Conduct assessments for malnutrition using various evaluation methods.
  • Develop and implement individualized medical nutrition therapy plans.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide medical nutrition therapy.
  • Educate patients and families on nutrition-related topics and care plans.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and research initiatives.
  • Supervise nutrition assistants and mentor health science interns/students.
  • Coordinate nutrition education activities and develop educational materials.
  • Engage in lifelong self-development to improve knowledge and skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, Food or related field.
  • 2 years of clinical nutrition experience or 1 year clinical nutrition experience plus transplant internship.
  • Experience working with chronic disease states such as ESRD, ESLD, CKD, NASH, NAFLD, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and malnutrition.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good time management and self-starter abilities.
  • Critical and analytical skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, Food or related field.
  • 2 years of clinical experience with adult/elderly population.
  • 1 year of transplant experience.
  • Specialty Certification specialization (e.g. CCTC, CDCES, CNSC, CSR etc).
  • ServSafe Certification.
