About the position

The Bancroft Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, is a full-time position responsible for processing special collections materials for digital capture and publication. This role involves creating and maintaining metadata for both digitized and born-digital resources, contributing to the development of best practices and workflows, and managing multiple projects in collaboration with various stakeholders. The librarian will play a critical role in enhancing cross-departmental relationships and will supervise student assistants while participating in library-wide activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and set strategies for prioritization and selection of special collections for digitization and publishing.
  • Process special collections for digital capture, reformatting, and data extraction.
  • Create and maintain descriptive, administrative, structural, and preservation metadata for digital special collection resources.
  • Contribute to department-level planning and development of best practice guidelines and workflows.
  • Manage multiple digital projects in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Stay updated on digital, born digital, data, archival, and special collection standards and practices.
  • Participate in departmental activities and library-wide working groups.
  • Train and supervise student assistants.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree or enrollment in an advanced degree program at the time of application.
  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent degree by the start date.
  • One year of experience in digital special collection initiatives, including digitization and metadata creation.
  • One year of experience with metadata creation, maintenance, and migration for special collection materials.
  • Training or work experience with project management.
  • Knowledge of ArchivesSpace and digital asset management platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with digitization, metadata, archival, and special collection standards.
  • Experience with collections/archives-as-data concepts and scripting languages.
