About the position

The Digital Editor at National Geographic plays a crucial role in shaping and executing visually rich and scientifically sourced digital storytelling. This position focuses on making data-informed content decisions that resonate with audiences across various platforms, ensuring that the content is relevant, timely, and engaging. The editor will lead content creation from planning to publication, targeting platform-specific audiences and adhering to high editorial standards.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and suggest framing for pitches at regularly scheduled pitch meetings.
  • Identify stories to experiment with that align with each of our KPIs as well as our core topic areas, including science, environment, health, history & culture, and animals.
  • Build and maintain a freelance network of writers.
  • Participate in regular digital editorial pitch meetings, leading discussions and executing decisions made.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Engagement Team to advance editorial Search strategy, craft headlines, and explore new digital tactics.
  • Work with the Editorial Newsletter team to drive subscriptions and reader engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Social team on digital content ideas and larger digital projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of editorial experience in digital publishing.
  • Strong background in editing with knowledge of search engine optimization and a proven track record of writing compelling headlines.
  • Future-forward digital editing skills and experience using data-driven tools.
  • Ability to evolve story ideas from brainstorming sessions and write digitally-optimized headlines and text.
  • Highly developed ability to recognize and create story ideas, including those with significant visual and multimedia components.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion and ability to work cooperatively with various personalities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience creating content for social media.
  • Keen sense of the competitive media landscape, including tried tactics and industry trends.
  • Understanding of the priorities and demands of a large umbrella company, such as The Walt Disney Company.
  • Experience with social video ideation and promotion.
  • Experience in National Geographic content areas.
