About the position

The City of Boston's Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) is seeking a dedicated Digital Equity Project Coordinator to enhance broadband accessibility and affordability for all residents. This position is crucial in addressing the digital divide that affects many communities, ensuring that every Bostonian has the opportunity to connect to the digital economy. The coordinator will be responsible for leading various digital equity projects, collaborating with local stakeholders, and advocating for policies that promote digital inclusion. The role requires a proactive approach to project management, community engagement, and policy development, with a focus on improving broadband services across the city. As a Digital Equity Project Coordinator, you will work closely with the Senior Digital Equity Manager and the Digital Equity Officer, contributing to the strategic planning and execution of initiatives aimed at increasing broadband availability. Your responsibilities will include organizing public outreach events, engaging with community members, and representing the city in discussions on broadband policy at both local and national levels. You will also oversee small teams of interns and fellows, providing mentorship and guidance in their work related to digital equity. This position is not only about managing projects but also about fostering relationships with various stakeholders, including government agencies, businesses, and educational institutions. Your efforts will directly impact the lives of residents by ensuring they have the necessary resources and skills to thrive in a digital world. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of broadband technologies, excellent communication skills, and a passion for promoting digital equity in Boston.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project planning and coordination for digital equity projects, ensuring alignment with the city's broadband affordability and availability goals.
  • Spearhead administrative tasks associated with digital equity projects, including maintaining documentation, developing policies, and record-keeping.
  • Actively engage with local stakeholders, including government entities, businesses, and public institutions, to understand and address their digital connectivity needs and goals.
  • Collaborate with city staff in agencies involved in digital equity efforts, such as the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, Boston Public Schools, and Boston Housing Authority, among others.
  • Organize and execute public outreach events focused on digital equity and DoIT initiatives, enhancing community engagement and participation.
  • Represent the city in local and national discussions on broadband policy, advocating for solutions that increase digital accessibility for Boston residents.
  • Contribute to research and formulation of strategies to enhance broadband services.
  • Oversee and support small teams of interns and fellows, providing guidance and mentorship in digital equity projects and initiatives.
  • Perform related work as required.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university, with at least four (4) years of relevant professional experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Information Technology, Public Policy or a related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Relevant professional experience in government, advocacy, or non-profit sectors, particularly in policy development related to digital equity, may substitute for education.
  • Independent and efficient project management capabilities, with minimal supervision required.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of broadband technologies and a keen understanding of the evolving broadband policy landscape.
  • Strong organizational skills with a creative and entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving.
  • Experience in digital skills training programs is a plus.
