About the position

The Digital Humanities Librarian at Yale University is a full-time position within the Computational Methods and Data Department, focusing on supporting digital humanities research. This role involves designing and implementing services that aid scholars in learning digital methods, managing data, and applying best practices in digital humanities. The librarian collaborates with various stakeholders to promote advanced digital methods and provides training and support to enhance data education in the arts and humanities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to digital humanities graduate consultants and serve as the main point of escalation for research consultations.
  • Work with the Data Services team to ensure proper acquisition and availability of electronic humanities-focused data for text mining.
  • Promote the use of library collections for digital humanities research, including text mining and digital exhibitions.
  • Provide training and support in cleaning, processing, and visualizing humanities data.
  • Advocate for advanced digital humanities methods through consultations and instructional materials.
  • Maintain relationships with the Carpentries and coordinate related instructional programs.
  • Evaluate instructional needs in digital humanities and provide additional workshops and documentation.
  • Train graduate student researchers in digital humanities methods through various instructional formats.
  • Participate in library planning and engage in professional organizations and collaborative activities.
  • Monitor developments in digital humanities to ensure excellence in research support services.

Requirements

  • An MLIS or MIS from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent advanced degree.
  • Two years of professional experience supporting scholarly clients with instruction in digital methods.
  • Demonstrated understanding of traditional humanities research methods and familiarity with digital humanities trends.
  • Ability to perform common data-cleaning techniques and tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting and delivering user-facing services.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of library practices and procedures.
  • Proven experience or certification in teaching a digital skill or method.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in humanities.
