About the position

The Digital Initiatives Librarian at CIIS is a pivotal role that involves managing and leading the development of the CIIS institutional repository, archives, and digital collections. This position reports to the Assistant Library Director for Public Services and Research Support and plays a crucial part in enhancing the library's digital presence and supporting the diverse research needs of the CIIS community. The librarian will be responsible for planning and administering the Digital Commons, managing access to archival content, creating metadata, and developing scholarly communications initiatives. The role requires a commitment to fostering an inclusive and antiracist environment, aligning with the library's mission to support research and learning across various disciplines, particularly in counseling, psychology, philosophy, and social justice. In this role, the librarian will lead the implementation and management of discovery and repository tools for digital collections, including archival content, online journals, and electronic theses. They will coordinate the development of metadata and linked data to enhance the discovery and management of digital content, ensuring that policies and procedures are documented for each project. The librarian will also administer access to the physical CIIS historical archives, organize and describe archival assets, and collaborate with various departments to manage digital assets effectively. The Digital Initiatives Librarian will stay updated on developments in scholarly communication and open access, advising library and university stakeholders on relevant policies and practices. They will actively engage with faculty to support the dissemination of their works and provide guidance on publication ethics and rights management. Additionally, the librarian will cultivate communication with stakeholders, conduct university-wide programming, and serve as the primary contact with the institutional repository vendor. This position also involves recruiting, training, and supervising technical staff and student assistants, participating in library planning, and continuously improving digital archives and project skills. The librarian will engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with advancements in library and digital scholarship fields, ensuring that the library remains a vital resource for the CIIS community.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation, management, and assessment of discovery and repository tools for digital collections.
  • Coordinate the development of metadata and linked data to support the discovery and management of digital content.
  • Administer and manage access to the physical CIIS historical archives and special manuscripts.
  • Keep abreast of developments in scholarly communication and communicate key information to library and university stakeholders.
  • Advise on library policy issues related to digital resources such as copyright policy and fair use.
  • Support CIIS scholars in publishing and disseminating their works to the scholarly community.
  • Cultivate communication with stakeholders and content providers, collaborating with subject librarians.
  • Conduct and contribute to University-wide programming including presentations, conferences, and publications.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise technical staff and student assistants as budget permits.
  • Participate in library planning and problem-solving meetings.

Requirements

  • ALA accredited Master's in Library Science degree or Master's degree in Archives, or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience working with digital collections associated with an archival repository.
  • Knowledge of current metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, OAI, and RDA.
  • Working knowledge of scholarly communication, intellectual property, and rights management.
  • Experience consulting with teaching faculty, administrators, and/or students to recruit content for digital projects.
  • Experience planning, promoting, and delivering programming in an academic setting.
  • At least one year of experience in an academic library.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing digital content in a bepress Digital Commons repository system.
  • Three years or more of related experience in an academic library, archives, or museum.
  • Proficiency in metadata principles and practices such as those found in Dublin Core.
  • Experience with coding in web contexts, such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, XML, XSLT.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of new scholarly publishing models.
