About the position

This is a fully benefited, full-time position at Harvard University, specifically within the Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) department. The role is funded through June 30, 2025, with the possibility of renewal based on funding, university priorities, and satisfactory job performance. HUIT is a community of IT professionals dedicated to providing technological solutions that support teaching, learning, research, and administration. The department is looking for individuals who are technically proficient, user-focused, and capable of collaborating effectively in a team environment. The Library Technology Services (LTS) team is seeking a motivated Data Engineer to contribute to the development of the university's next-generation Digital Preservation System. This position involves the design, development, and maintenance of data APIs, as well as managing extract/load/transform (ETL) activities. The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in migrating data from existing endpoints to new systems and defining data integration services for the application portfolio. In this role, the Data Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout all phases of the Digital Preservation System project, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. The individual will be responsible for overall data management design and construction, ensuring the optimization of data access, integration, and utilization. Additionally, the Data Engineer will manage the interface and connectivity between multiple data storage sources, leveraging advanced database administration expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Lead aspects of data management services including database and analytics platform research and design.
  • Collaborate to prepare data verification and testing methods for data/applications loaded into the warehouse or other data repositories.
  • Work with business partners to determine needs and evaluate solutions.
  • Code, develop, and document complex scripts, integration mappings, workflows, and stored procedures.
  • Provide technical expertise and direction in developing and supporting system-level programs.
  • Troubleshoot advanced data problems and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Create new or enhanced components of data architecture and interfaces.
  • Provide training to clients and staff.
  • May function as subject matter expert or project lead.
  • Actively contribute to the formulation of plans and policies.
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies, and Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of ETL (Extraction, Transformation, and Loading), reporting, and database technologies.
  • Ability to code in Python and/or Javascript/NodeJS.
  • Familiarity with Oracle, Postgresql, and MySQL, with strong database skills in one.
  • Ability to specify and/or build data-bound API services.
  • Advanced communication, technical, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated team performance skills and a service mindset approach.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred.
