About the position

The University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is seeking adjunct faculty to teach in the Digital Media and Web Technology Program, specifically for the course CMST 301 - Digital Media and Society. This course serves as a survey of technological advancements in digital media and their societal impacts. The primary objective is to elucidate how digital media has transformed the communication of ideas within society and to empower students to make informed choices regarding the creation and consumption of digital media, taking into account global, social, ethical, and legal contexts. Key topics covered in the course include social media, the visual display of information, ethics and privacy, participatory media, and the cultural implications of digital media. As an adjunct faculty member, you will play a crucial role in engaging students through frequent interactions that motivate them to succeed. You will guide students in collaborative learning and the application of their knowledge through problem- and project-based demonstrations. Providing constructive feedback is essential, as is demonstrating current subject-matter expertise to help students connect concepts across their academic program. Additionally, you will be expected to provide feedback to your program chair regarding potential curricular improvements, ensuring that the program remains relevant and effective. UMGC is committed to supporting its faculty members' professional success. New faculty members are required to complete a two-week online orientation, FacDev 411, as a condition of hire. The position is part-time and will remain open until filled, with salary commensurate with experience. Responsibilities

  • Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed.
  • Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work.
  • Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, helping students connect concepts across their academic program.
  • Provide feedback to the program chair on possible curricular improvements.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Professional experience in digital media.

Nice-to-haves

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience teaching adult learners and distance education is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign, Photoshop, Premier, or Animate).
  • Knowledge of web technology (web design, development, or programming).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Access).
  • Knowledge of Virtual Reality (Unity or Unreal).
