About the position

Yellowstone Public Radio (YPR)/KEMC is hiring an audio and digital media reporter to cover YPR's broadcast area. YPR is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff whose perspectives are heard and valued. An ideal candidate can cover breaking news and pitch enterprise and investigative features, distilling complex issues into easily digestible segments for a general audience. Furthermore, an ideal candidate can translate YPR newsroom reporting for digital media consumption, including website and social media assets. YPR's newsroom seeks to amplify diverse voices and prioritizes collaboration within our organization and partner outlets in service to our listeners.

Responsibilities

  • Develop sources and story ideas.
  • Report both breaking news and longer-term stories following industry standards of ethics, accuracy, and fairness.
  • Write and voice reports in a conversational style consistent with NPR's news magazines.
  • Produce and mix packages for broadcast.
  • Prepare web posts, social media assets, digital video and still photography, and podcast assets for the YPR Newsroom.
  • Work under tight deadlines and collaborate with team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, broadcasting, media, or related field.
  • Experience with sound gathering, editing, and production for broadcast.
  • Experience with website content management systems and visual media editing software.
  • Proficiency with social media as a tool for reporting and promotion.
  • Experience as a news reporter and/or producer in broadcasting.
  • Strong writing and interviewing skills, and comfort with public speaking.
  • Proficiency with sound editing software.
  • Knowledge of journalism ethics and professional standards of objectivity, fairness, newsworthiness, and balance.
  • Valid drivers' license.
  • Self-starter who will initiate projects/assignments under the direction and supervision of the YPR news director and consistently meet deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3 or more years of experience in radio, investigative reporting, broadcasting, or directly related experience.
  • Vehicle ownership.
  • Photography and video capture and editing skills.
