About the position

The Digital Media Librarian at North Carolina State University plays a pivotal role in managing the digital media program across the James B. Hunt Jr. Library and the D. H. Hill Jr. Library. This position is responsible for overseeing both the spaces and services dedicated to digital media, which includes audio and video production, live streaming, photography, and graphic design. The librarian will engage with students and faculty to ensure that the media production spaces are accessible to beginners while also being equipped for advanced users. This will involve developing comprehensive documentation, support infrastructure, and conducting workshops tailored for both users and staff. In addition to managing the digital media program, the Digital Media Librarian will support student and faculty learning through various means, including consultations, workshops, course-based instruction, and the creation of web-based tutorials and other learning content. Collaboration is key in this role, as the librarian will work alongside campus and community partners to enhance library outreach and student-focused events. The position also includes supervisory responsibilities, overseeing one full-time library specialist and indirectly supervising a team of part-time student assistants. The Digital Media Librarian will report to the Lead Librarian for Experiential Learning Services and will be expected to contribute to the Libraries' Strategic Plan by fostering a welcoming environment for patrons and colleagues alike. The role offers opportunities for professional development and active participation in library-wide committees and task forces. The position is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and supports flexible work arrangements based on departmental needs, promoting a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the digital media program, including spaces and services in the Hunt and Hill Libraries.
  • Manage services related to audio and video production, live streaming, photography, and graphic design.
  • Engage with students and faculty to make media production spaces approachable for beginners and well-equipped for advanced users.
  • Develop documentation, support infrastructure, and workshops for users and staff.
  • Support student and faculty learning through consultations, workshops, and web-based tutorials.
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners for library outreach and student-focused events.
  • Supervise one full-time library specialist and indirectly supervise part-time student assistants.

Requirements

  • Master of Library & Information Science (MLS) or equivalent advanced degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital media creation and production technologies, processes, and spaces.
  • Experience in engaging with a user community and commitment to high-quality library services and teaching.
  • Ability to explore and incorporate emerging technologies into learning and research support.
  • Experience in supervising staff and/or student employees.
  • Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well-being.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and contribution to the library profession.
