About the position

As the lead librarian for Bristol's Taunton Library Learning Commons (LLC), the Reference Librarian - Digital Services oversees library operations at Bristol's Taunton Center, including the supervision of student assistants and one part-time library assistant. This role is crucial in ensuring that library services are effectively delivered to students and faculty. The librarian will collaborate with other LLC staff to oversee access services for the location, deliver information literacy instruction, and assist researchers in utilizing both print and electronic resources. The position also holds primary responsibility for maintaining the LLC's web presence, which is essential for providing access to library resources and services across all four LLCs. This part-time, non-benefitted position allows for up to 18.5 hours of work per week, with a schedule that may vary based on local needs. Some travel to other locations is required, making flexibility an important aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee library operations at Bristol's Taunton Center, including supervision of student assistants and part-time library assistant.
  • Manage the LLC website for content and organization, ensuring timely updates of critical information.
  • Identify, recommend, implement, and evaluate current and emerging technologies for effective library service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance of the library website with Bristol's style, accessibility, and security policies for both desktop and mobile devices.
  • Administer, manage, and train staff on the LibGuides content management tool and related Springshare software.
  • Provide graphical design for the website, promotional materials, and signage.
  • Maintain the LLC's social media presence, including communications via the Bristol app.
  • Provide general reference assistance to library users through various mediums such as online chat, email, LMS, Zoom, and Teams.
  • Conduct information literacy instruction and orientation sessions regarding physical library services/resources.
  • Compile statistics on usage of library services/resources and create library displays and exhibits.
  • Participate in circulation desk activities, assisting students with library equipment and tutoring services.
  • Contribute to the development of library collections to support curricula and course requirements.
  • Maintain professional knowledge of trends in library and technology fields, recommending innovative ideas to connect students with information.
  • Organize the assigned location's Library and Learning Commons, including physical space and daily activities.
  • Provide outreach to administration, faculty, staff, and students about LLC resources and services.
  • Hire, supervise, develop, and lead assigned staff, conducting regular performance evaluations.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive work environment that supports professional growth and service excellence.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Library & Information Science, or closely related field (completion by Sept 30, 2024 required).
  • Minimum of two years of experience in library operations, library information systems, reference services, bibliographic instruction, and access services.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Reliable transportation for travel to meetings, trainings, or campus locations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience creating and delivering information literacy instruction in a college setting.
  • Experience designing and managing content in Spring LibGuides.
  • Experience with web design and website management.
  • Proficiency using course learning management systems, preferably Canvas.
  • Proficiency using Canva or similar graphical design software.
  • Experience using social media for marketing or outreach.
  • Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English, preferably Portuguese or Spanish.
