About the position

The Digital Video Evidence Technician plays a crucial role within the Metro Transit Police Department, which is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of over 3.2 million individuals across a vast Transit Zone that encompasses the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. This position is integral to the Criminal Investigation Division, focusing on the review and analysis of digital video evidence captured through advanced CCTV technology. The technician will engage in real-time live video surveillance, as well as the retrieval and examination of recorded footage from an extensive network of cameras monitoring Metro Stations, Buses, and Railcars. The emphasis on detailed examination of digital evidence is vital for supporting investigative processes and ensuring the safety of Metro customers and employees. The technician will be required to travel throughout the Transit Zone, responding promptly to incident sites and crime scenes as necessary. The standard working hours for this position are from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, although shift changes may occur based on departmental needs. The role demands a proactive approach to monitoring CCTV systems, handling recorded images, and ensuring compliance with established policies regarding the release of video evidence. The technician will also be responsible for acknowledging and processing security notifications, conducting system checks, and maintaining a master file of all recovered video in accordance with WMATA policies and applicable laws. In addition to technical skills, the position requires the ability to testify in court regarding the work product and to interact with various internal and external entities requesting video evidence. Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze live video surveillance from CCTV systems.
  • Retrieve and review recorded video footage from various WMATA locations.
  • Respond to security notifications and alarms in a timely manner.
  • Process requests for digital video evidence in accordance with established policies.
  • Conduct system checks to ensure proper camera operation and complete repair orders as needed.
  • Maintain a master file of all recovered video in compliance with WMATA policies and laws.
  • Testify in court regarding video evidence as required.
  • Travel to various locations within the Transit Zone to recover video evidence.
  • Provide real-time details to responding units during incidents.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a police or security-related field.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's Degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or related field preferred.
  • Experience with video technologies or information systems management preferred.
