About the position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP 1) role at YAI involves assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in maximizing their strengths and achieving personal goals. The DSP provides emotional support, ensures health and safety, and facilitates activities that promote social connections and community engagement. This position requires a commitment to person-centered care and the implementation of individualized support plans while maintaining a safe and organized environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities while providing emotional support.
  • Support individuals in meeting personal goals that enhance their quality of life and encourage social interactions.
  • Supervise and ensure the safety and care of individuals at all times, adhering to program guidelines.
  • Manage crisis situations and provide appropriate supervision to ensure health and wellness.
  • Implement individualized service and behavior support plans, demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies.
  • Maintain a clean and organized therapeutic environment.
  • Provide personal care and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Administer medication as prescribed and teach/develop skills for individuals.
  • Facilitate communication and resolve disputes among individuals.
  • Plan and prepare balanced meals according to dietary restrictions.
  • Transport and escort individuals to various activities and appointments.
  • Collect and summarize data on individuals' observable behavior and report changes to the clinical team.
  • Participate in team meetings and communicate programmatic needs effectively.
  • Utilize approved training techniques to respond to challenging behaviors and ensure safety.
  • Provide coverage for other direct support staff as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to meet essential physical demands of the position, including frequent walking, standing, and lifting individuals with assistance.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills for documentation and service tracking.
  • Enthusiasm for working with individuals with I/DD and the ability to demonstrate patience and empathy.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and using related systems for task completion.
  • Must hold or obtain and maintain SCIP-R certification within one year of appointment.
  • Must hold or obtain additional certifications as required by program assignment within one year of appointment.

Nice-to-haves
