About the position

As a Community Habilitation Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting individuals with developmental and learning disabilities. Your primary responsibility will be to work directly with these individuals, helping them to live independently and thrive within their communities. This position is available in various capacities, including full-time, part-time, and per diem, across Erie County. Your duties will encompass a wide range of activities aimed at promoting community integration and enhancing the quality of life for the individuals you support. This includes assisting with community travel and transportation, providing guidance on money management and budgeting, facilitating appropriate social interactions, and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices and exercise. You will also help individuals navigate medical appointments and understand doctor's orders, ensuring they have the necessary skills to access the community and maintain their independence. Additionally, you will provide other instruction, services, and supports as directed by your supervisor, tailoring your approach to meet the unique needs of each individual. To succeed in this role, you will need to possess strong time management skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team. You will be expected to engage in one-on-one interactions with individuals receiving services, requiring a moderate level of written and oral communication skills, as well as a high level of interpersonal skills. Knowledge of behavioral techniques and developmental disabilities is essential to effectively assist in the care of the individuals you support. Familiarity with computer systems and the ability to utilize various software programs will also be necessary. Upon hire, you will be required to complete First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving training to ensure the safety and well-being of those you serve.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid New York State Driver's License in good standing.
  • Experience working with people with developmental disabilities preferred.
  • First Aid Certification required upon hire.
  • Ability to work 1-1 with individuals receiving services.
  • Moderate level of written and oral communication skills.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Knowledge of behavioral techniques and developmental disabilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of pertinent experience in health and human services related field preferred.
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities preferred.
