About the position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role involves assisting individuals with daily living activities in various settings, including homes, non-residential facilities, and group homes. The DSP provides training in personal and social skills, helps with basic academics, and supports clients in achieving their personal goals. This position requires a compassionate approach to care, focusing on enhancing the quality of life for individuals with special needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily living activities at the person's home or facility.
  • Provide training in basic personal and social skills, simple academics, or work skills.
  • Arrange for needed medical care and provide necessary services.
  • Perform housecleaning chores and train clients in basic housecleaning skills.
  • Assist clients in shopping for food and household supplies, and train them in shopping skills.
  • Help clients plan budgets and pay bills, encouraging nutritious meal preparation.
  • Provide emotional support to families in crisis or under stress.
  • Assist in the presentation of educational group lectures.
  • Provide safe transportation for clients, ensuring compliance with vehicle safety laws.
  • Develop individual service/treatment plans for assigned clients.
  • Assist clients with personal grooming and routine personal business.
  • Encourage recreational activities that enhance client self-worth.
  • Care for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation or family disruption.
  • Observe and report signs and symptoms of illness to case managers.
  • Counsel clients on behavioral problems and daily decision-making.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client records and complete necessary documentation.
  • Attend meetings and educational programs for continuing education.
  • Monitor client behavior and participate in case reviews.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license may be required for some positions.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred for higher-level positions.
  • One year of experience providing direct care services to special needs individuals for DSP 2 level.
  • Two years of experience for DSP 3 level, or an associate degree with related experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a human service setting is beneficial.
  • Training in behavioral management techniques is a plus.
