Direct Support Professionals (DSP) are dedicated individuals who assist people with disabilities in realizing their full potential. This role involves supporting and empowering individuals to lead lives of their choosing, fostering a spirit of partnership, and ensuring their emotional, physical, and personal well-being. DSPs work in various locations and have flexible schedules available, making it an ideal position for those looking to make a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a shared relationship with individuals that supports their unique personal desires and needs.
  • Assist individuals with decision-making, problem-solving, and encourage self-advocacy.
  • Support individuals in recognizing their personal strengths and sharing them in community settings.
  • Establish trusting relationships by being reliable and on time, working towards the individual's goals.
  • Support healthy living practices, including diet, exercise, and emotional support.
  • Report instances of physical or emotional harm in accordance with agency policies.
  • Familiarize with safety measures for on-site and off-site activities, including emergency responses.
  • Assist individuals in maintaining a clean and comfortable environment.
  • Encourage participation in volunteer, educational, recreational, and work activities.
  • Provide medication administration support as needed, complying with agency policies.
  • Participate in service planning meetings and advocate for individuals' needs.
  • Safely operate agency vehicles as per policy and NYS Traffic Laws.
  • Attend required trainings and maintain necessary certifications.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (TASC) preferred.
  • Exceptional written, communication, and computer skills.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Ability to be certified in all required trainings.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • One-year experience working with individuals with disabilities (preferred).
