About the position

The Director of Advanced Analytics & Data Science with a Marketing/Insurance focus is a pivotal role that provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for the organization's data science initiatives. This position is responsible for driving innovation through machine learning and modeling, leveraging data-driven insights to achieve business objectives and maintain a competitive advantage. The role will primarily focus on marketing but will also encompass all areas of insurance, ensuring a comprehensive approach to data utilization across the organization. In this capacity, the Director will be expected to be both a player and a coach, as the data science team is relatively small. This means that the individual must be a capable hands-on contributor while also positively influencing and mentoring team members. Exceptional strategic communication skills are essential, as the Director must articulate complex concepts clearly to executive-level stakeholders. The ability to present data-driven insights and recommendations in a compelling manner to executive leadership is crucial for success in this role. The Director will also need to demonstrate mastery in advanced data analysis and machine learning techniques, employing statistical model frameworks to solve complex business problems and drive organizational strategy and innovation. Technical data mastery is required, with expert-level proficiency in query languages such as SQL and Python, as well as a deep understanding of relational data and data tools like Git, GitHub, Snowflake, and the open-source ecosystem. Coding expertise is necessary, particularly in writing complex, efficient, and scalable production-ready code in Python or R, with knowledge of generative AI for coding being a plus. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive Business Intelligence (BI) strategy that aligns with the organization's goals and objectives. Leadership skills are paramount, as the individual will drive data-driven initiatives and foster a culture of innovation and excellence within the team. Building strategic partnerships both internally and externally to leverage data assets and drive business growth and transformation will also be a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in data science related areas (statistics, applied economics, data science).
  • 8+ years of professional analytical experience (4 years required).
  • 8+ years of experience in P&C or Life/Retirement (4 years required).
  • Expert-level proficiency in SQL and Python.
  • Deep understanding of relational data and data tools (Git, GitHub, Snowflake, etc.).
  • Expertise in writing complex, efficient, and scalable production-ready code in Python or R.
