About the position

The Design Director at Royal Caribbean Group plays a pivotal leadership role in overseeing new building projects as assigned by the EVP of New Buildings. This position requires the incumbent to continually direct the activities of architects, designers, and computer-aided design professionals to achieve brand-specific design concept goals for various brands within the company. The Design Director serves as a vital conduit of information and intelligence between the corporation and the design staff, as well as outside architects and design firms, ensuring the success of these collaborative efforts. In this role, the Design Director is responsible for directing, developing, and maintaining the overall design process for all assigned projects. This includes forming and maintaining brand-specific design concepts that are credible and reflective of the corporation's voice, thereby fostering a culture of design innovation. The Design Director leads collaborative forums aimed at developing comprehensive brand conceptual programs for each ship and class, striving for unique first-in-class design thinking. Participation in Brand Think Tank groups with representatives from other departments is also a key aspect of this role, where the Design Director acts as a creative design leader. The position involves evaluating the talent and efforts of architects, designers, and consultants, monitoring the quality and suitability of their work, and providing constructive feedback based on brand concepts. The Design Director is expected to effectively communicate these concepts to global building site offices and shipyards, leading troubleshooting efforts and resolving related issues. Presentations at various levels, from executive to smaller groups, are a regular part of the job, requiring the use of diverse media to compellingly convey design ideas and recommendations. Additionally, the Design Director analyzes and compares statistics, ratios, and other metrics of various ships within the fleet and across competitors, providing observations and recommendations. This role also includes creating planning models that align with the organization's mission and values, based on thorough internal and external needs assessments. The Design Director collaborates with peer management in Newbuilding and other key departments to ensure objectives are met and manages customer relationships at all levels. Financial responsibilities include managing multimillion-dollar projects, overseeing budgetary planning, and ensuring cost control across various design-related expenses. The Design Director is also tasked with attracting, training, and retaining diverse talent, providing professional development through mentoring and performance management. This role exercises the usual authority of a director concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, and terminations. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Interior Design or Architecture required; Architectural background preferred.
  • MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years' experience within the design industry, preferably in mid to large high-end hospitality environments.
  • Minimum of 5 years managing multi-million-dollar projects.
  • Proven management experience with direct subordinate manager(s) and staff.
  • Ability to travel internationally or domestically 25% of the time.
