About the position

The Director of Assay Design and Development at Abbott is a leadership role focused on advancing research and development in Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technologies. The position requires a highly experienced individual with a strong background in molecular biology and a proven track record in commercializing multiplexed tests. The director will lead a team of scientists to design and optimize ultra-rapid PCR assays for decentralized applications, driving innovation and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design, development, characterization, and optimization of ultra-rapid PCR assays for decentralized settings.
  • Manage and mentor a team of scientists and technicians, providing guidance and support for high-quality research outcomes.
  • Establish plans, timelines, and protocols for concept and feasibility testing, characterization, and design transfer.
  • Develop new protocols, standard operating procedures, and train personnel on techniques.
  • Analyze and interpret complex PCR data using bioinformatics tools to ensure accuracy.
  • Drive innovation in PCR technology by exploring new methodologies to enhance product performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to PCR development and data interpretation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of PCR technologies into products.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory standards and guidelines for PCR-related activities.
  • Present research progress to cross-functional teams and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in PCR research and development, focusing on assay development and optimization.
  • Highly proficient in various PCR techniques, including qPCR, RT-PCR, dPCR, rapid PCR, multiplexing PCR, and nested PCR.
  • Experience with isothermal nucleic acid amplification technologies is a plus.
  • Diverse knowledge of analytical, metrology, and functional test methods.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing research teams.
  • Strong data analysis skills with experience using bioinformatics tools and software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of publishing in scientific journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
