About the position

The Director of Capital Projects in the Generation Engineering division at APS is responsible for leading complex, multi-disciplinary capital replacement and retrofit projects across the non-nuclear Generation fleet. This strategic leadership role requires extensive project management experience and technical knowledge to ensure projects align with technical, budgetary, and regulatory standards while promoting continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a diverse team of project managers, engineers, and technical professionals, setting strategic direction and fostering accountability and excellence.
  • Direct design, engineering support, and project management efforts to ensure timely and budget-compliant project completion, adhering to environmental, NERC, and WECC regulatory standards.
  • Oversee budget allocation, contract compliance, and quality assurance to meet organizational goals and drive long-term value.
  • Champion change management initiatives, mentor managers, and cultivate a culture of growth and transformation across project teams.
  • Influence and set direction for capital projects within the non-nuclear generation fleet, overseeing all stages of planning, engineering, and construction.
  • Develop and manage the achievement of long-term and short-term goals with fleet-wide impact, implementing strategies to provide reliable service to customers.
  • Plan, evaluate, and recommend strategies, programs, policies, and processes that align with overall business objectives.
  • Oversee multiple project management and contract teams, selecting and developing a high-performing team through effective coaching and performance management.
  • Manage department and project budgets, tracking costs and adherence to estimates, and initiating actions in case of deviations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in engineering, construction management, project management, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in supervisory or management positions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) designation.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Risk Management Professional (RMP) certification.
  • Experience in planning, executing, and managing a high volume of complex retrofit and replacement projects.
  • Experience negotiating contracts.
  • Experience directing multi-discipline teams.
