About the position

The Director of Risk Management at Republic Services is a pivotal role responsible for identifying, assessing, and analyzing risks that impact the business from a claims perspective. This position requires a deep understanding of the organization's risk tolerance concerning various exposures, particularly in Auto Liability, General Liability, and Workers' Compensation. The Director will manage a claims program that aligns with the company's risk management objectives, ensuring that the organization effectively navigates its risk landscape. In this role, the Director will build and lead a high-performing team, demonstrating a proven track record of collaboration with senior leadership, particularly in Risk, Legal, and Operations. The Director will bring a comprehensive perspective on claims management, leveraging strong hands-on knowledge and experience in business insurance. This position also involves interaction across the company on various claims management issues, where the Director will present ideas and recommendations to enhance the organization's risk management strategies. The Director will work closely with Legal and Risk Management to advise on claims, participate in mediation, and oversee the management of both an internal claims team and a third-party claims administrator. The role includes analyzing case law, assisting with policies related to incident investigation, managing executive claim debrief sessions, and providing professional support to the Risk Management Department. The Director will also evaluate the effectiveness of claims management activities and collaborate with various departments to implement loss prevention programs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to risk management throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on auto liability, general liability, and workers' compensation claims across the organization.
  • Participate with outside counsel in mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
  • Oversee the management of an internal claims team and a dedicated third-party claims administrator.
  • Work with Legal, insurance brokers, and insurance companies in selecting outside counsel for representation.
  • Analyze case law and provide recommendations to Risk Management and Senior Leadership.
  • Assist with policies and procedures relating to incident investigation and claims reporting and handling in conjunction with Safety and Legal.
  • Manage executive claim debrief sessions.
  • Assist in recommending insurance reserves.
  • Draft and contribute reports to the company's Chief Legal Officer, senior management, and others as necessary.
  • Provide professional support to the company's Risk Management Department on a wide range of claims investigation and management, insurance, loss/exposure, policies and procedures, and other matters.
  • Provide claims support related to the company's nationwide operations on a full range of risk management, claims, and insurance matters.
  • Identify, assess, and prioritize claims risks, and assist in developing the company's claims strategy.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the claims management activities.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management to determine where enhancements to insurance coverage can be made from a claims perspective.
  • Enhance the system for the analysis and trending of claims management data from all pertinent sources, analyze patterns, and make recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Work with Safety and Operations to implement loss prevention programs throughout the company to reduce or mitigate risk.
  • Develop and present claims management educational offerings based on analysis of incident/loss data.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and communications with key departments within the organization, including Legal, Safety, Human Resources, Finance, and Operations.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in claims management for a corporation, third-party administrator, or insurance brokerage.
  • Broad knowledge of corporate claims management functions, the insurance marketplace encompassing casualty, workers' compensation, and auto liability.
  • Experience in a leadership role providing guidance, mentoring, and developing a team of direct reports.
  • Risk Management experience with a Fortune 500 company preferred.
  • Experience with safety and loss control programs and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Claims Adjuster License preferred, but not required.
  • Other certifications (ARM, CRM, AIC, etc.) are a plus.
