About the position

The Director, Climate Risk at Montrose Environmental Group plays a pivotal role in enhancing and broadening the services offered by the company through its Sustainability and Climate Advisory (SCA) team. As companies face increasing pressure to proactively understand and address climate risks, opportunities, and impacts, this position will collaborate closely with the VP of Sustainability and Climate Advisory and the entire SCA team to develop, market, and deliver climate risk services and solutions to clients. This role is essential in guiding corporate clients through the complexities of climate-related financial disclosures and risk management, particularly in alignment with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. The Director will engage in a mix of business development, service development, project management, and staff development. This includes direct interactions with clients and leading a dedicated team of environmental sustainability professionals. The ideal candidate should possess at least 10 years of relevant experience, particularly in sustainability and climate consulting for industrial clients in sectors such as oil and gas, chemicals, power, and manufacturing. A key aspect of this role is the ability to sell climate risk services and expand the service line, ensuring that Montrose remains at the forefront of climate risk advisory services. In this position, the Director will be responsible for a full range of activities, including developing new climate-risk-related business through existing client relationships, supporting the development of climate risk services, and managing project teams to ensure successful delivery of client projects. The role also involves leading proposal development, providing coaching and training to team members, and collaborating with other Montrose Lines of Business to identify cross-selling opportunities. Keeping abreast of climate and sustainability trends, frameworks, standards, and regulations is crucial for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Actively develop new climate-risk-related business through existing client relationships, internal and external networking, and thought leadership.
  • Support the development of climate risk services and solutions as Montrose expands its offerings around climate impact and climate risk.
  • Design and lead projects to support clients in identifying, assessing, managing, and quantifying the financial impact of climate-related risks and opportunities, aligned with relevant standards.
  • Manage project teams to ensure successful and profitable delivery of client projects, supporting other Project Managers as needed.
  • Lead proposal development, including establishing scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Provide coaching and training to team members to support service delivery.
  • Work closely with team members focused on climate impact to identify synergies and jointly develop client opportunities.
  • Identify and attend key events for sponsorship, speaking opportunities, and brand exposure.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to establish focused campaigns to develop new leads.
  • Work with other Montrose Lines of Business to identify cross-selling opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Sustainability, Climate Science, or other Environmental Science/Environmental studies discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in climate impact and climate risk consulting, with demonstrated business development/sales, service development, team management, and project management/execution responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with interpreting and implementing climate-related regulations and frameworks, including TCFD, IFRS S2, CDP, and ESRS E1.
  • Experience establishing processes for identifying, assessing, and managing climate-related risks integrated into broader risk management processes.
  • Ability to identify and determine the impact of climate-related risks and opportunities on a company's business, strategy, and finances.
  • Experience conducting scenario analysis and modeling resilience across multiple climate scenarios.
  • Experience conducting Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions inventories in accordance with the GHG Protocol.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with materiality/double materiality assessments, including stakeholder engagement and peer benchmarking.
  • Experience with goal and target setting for material issues, including science-based target setting for GHG emissions.
  • Experience supporting decarbonization planning, such as climate transition plans and net zero plans.
  • Effective project management skills, including experience developing project proposals and budgets.
